Our story

The ETSEIAT cansat project started in 2008. A group of aeronautical engineers of Terrassa created the group in order to participate in the 1st International Cansat Competition organized by LEEM that october.

Afer the competition, most of the members left the team and new incorporations took place. With fresh members new ideas came up and the design completely changed its point of view. The initial 2008 design was a paraglide but the new team decided to create a UAV (Unmanned Air Vehicle). The project started as cansat 2009 and some structural and CFD analisys were done but after one year of technology development the team decided to return to the original paraglide idea.

Four months prior to the 2nd International Cansat Competition (also organized by LEEM) some students from the first and second year of the degree joined the team to help the existing members to create a fully operative cansat for the competition. Many tests were carried out and the We Cansat's XP-4A device finally could fly winning the 3rd award in Come-Back category.

After the second competition some members left the group and new members joined again.

This are the prototypes we have constructed and flown:

XP-1A/B: Were cansat structures whose aim was to test the paraglide stability and control. About 30 launches were made from an altitude of 30m.

XP-2A/B/C Snowcansat: Were also cansat structures and the aim was the same to test the cansat performance. The difference was that the meteorological conditions during the tests were mostly bad. The cansat flew in windy, stormy and icy conditions.

XP-3A Carboncansat /B Spring Testbed /C: This series of cansat were the first to mount the complete structure and direction mechanism. At this time the direcion was not the definitive but was the first ready to be launched. The direction proved to be good while the weather was good but in heavy weather it could not support the forces of the paraglide properly and the cansat entered stall. It was the first cansat that mounted a basic electronic system to test the direction mechanism.

P-4A Columbia: Was the cansat that flew in the 2nd International Competition organized by LEEM achiveing a 3rd position in the come-back class. This cansat mounted an enhanced structure design and also a perfectioned direction design that solved the stall problems in windy conditions. The final electronics were fully developed and implemented on this cansat.

XP-5A/B "Красный Октябрь": After the competition we decided to redesign de whole concept of direction and structure to improve performance, weight, strenght and simplicity. The structure concept changed radicaly from aluminum to ABS plastic to improve shock absorbing capabilities and weight. The direction, at the moment in process of preliminar design, forced us to change the fixing points of the paraglide to the structure. The aim of this model was to test the new configuration.
